Inverse psoriasis – Treatment And Remedies For This Form Of Psoriasis

Inverse Psoriasis – Treatment and Remedies

Inverse psoriasis, also sometimes known as flexural psoriasis, is a significantly different form of psoriasis. It, like most of the other forms of psoriasis, affects the skin. The areas where the skin folds become the spot for manifestation, and shiny red patches are visible in these places. Inverse psoriasis typically pops up in the area beneath the armpits, between the buttock cheeks, under the breasts or in the area surrounding the groin. These are not much different from plaque psoriasis, although they certainly lack the most distinguishing feature of the latter – formation of scales. Nevertheless, inverse psoriasis is still very painful and itchy. Moreover, because of its appearance in the armpits or groin, one may misdiagnose it as a fungal or yeast infection. Interestingly, if this condition is left untreated, it is not rare for fungal or yeast infections to develop as secondary infections.

Inverse Psoriasis
Although the medical community largely believes that yeast infections in the human body are related to inverse psoriasis, it has not yet been determined if it is the yeast infections which trigger psoriasis, or if the sweaty and irritated skin caused due to psoriasis leads to yeast infections.

In contrast to plaque psoriasis, the lesions of inverse psoriasis seem confluent, very red and visibly demarcated. The smooth patches of skin that develop because of psoriasis are very itchy and also painful at times. If a patient of inverse psoriasis tends to rub his skin (this can be purely unintentional, such as when walking) the condition worsens and psoriasis may become more aggravated.

Similar to other forms of psoriasis, flexural or inverse psoriasis can become extremely stubborn. It is important to note that medical community does not have an absolute cure of the condition, and there are still no prescription medications that ensure the complete remission of the disease. Most health experts suggest the use of corticosteroid creams for treatment. However, most of these only offer temporary relief.

For complete treatment of the condition, we recommend that you treat all symptoms related to inverse psoriasis. If you are suffering from a yeast infection, it is best that you treat it with a yeast infection cream. Additionally, you must use one of the various treatments available for inverse psoriasis to treat your condition.

Treatment of inverse psoriasis

Treating inverse psoriasis is not easy, and especially because the skin becomes highly sensitive. Steroid creams and ointments may seem excellent treatment options, however, occlusive dressings of these steroids only helps adding up of the moisture. Moreover, using too much steroid creams will work in thinning of your skin, and stretch marks may become visible in the later days. Prolonged exposure to steroid creams is not recommended because it may lead to body-wide side effects. It is best to use diluted topical creams (for example, 1-2% hydrocortisone creams) in combination with an anti-fungal ointment.

Calcipotriene or Dovonex is another treatment option that is known to work very well in cases of inverse psoriasis. However, application of these requires caution since they are very likely to produce an irritating effect on the skin. Similar caution must be exercised when using coal tar preparations or anthralin cream. Irritation of the skin will only aid in worsening of your condition. Some dermatologists also prescribe topical ointments such as Protopic and Elidel. Now, these drugs have FDA approval for treatment of eczema, but are also effectively used for the treatment of inverse psoriasis. Nevertheless, you must avoid long-term exposure to these creams because they are associated with an increased risk of skin cancer, lymphoma and viral infections.

In instances of severe inverse psoriasis, your doctor may suggest the use of body-wide medications to relieve you from the symptoms. Typically, these do work in maximum cases; however, they are not compatible with everyone. Most medications, such as cyclosporine, acitretin and Methotrexate work by affecting and weakening the immune system, and treating psoriasis. The medications are intended for oral intake, and your doctor will suggest a dose that he or she deems fit for your needs. Side effects associated with these medications include mild nausea, vomiting, etc. In addition to these, consumption of these medications also has some serious side effects, and these include acute hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, gastrointestinal ulcers, and more.

Systematic treatment options are also available for treatment of inverse psoriasis, and these involve injecting biologics into the patient. Biologics function by preventing production of cells that aid in development of psoriasis. Some popular biologics are Stelara and Enbrel. Mild side effects include headache, nausea and irritation at the site of injection. Serious side effects include cancer, seizures and even brain infections.

Remedies for inverse psoriasis

Special creams and powders are available which are significantly helpful in drying the sores caused due to inverse psoriasis. A very popular treatment remedy is Castellani’s Paint. Your doctor may recommend this, and you will have to go to a pharmacist to get it mixed. The remedy requires the patient to paint the affected area with a brush. The cream works to dry the sores in the skin’s folds. Powders make up another effective remedy. Most people who feel uncomfortable due to the feel and smell of the paint only use it when going to bed, while preferring the powder during the day.

Alternative treatment options for inverse psoriasis also include the use of certain herbs. As per the University of Maryland Medical Center, Oregon grape is a popular remedy, although it has to be used with a 10% cream. The University also adds that aloe vera gel is another important herb, and it must be used with 0.5% cream. Burdock root is effective in reducing the small patches caused by psoriasis, and even more when used in combination with cleavers. Echinacea enhances the body’s immune system and makes its less prone to infection by foreign organisms, thus reducing further possibilities of infection. However, it is strongly advised that you consult your doctor before using any herbal medications.

Consumption of certain vitamins is significantly helpful in reducing the symptoms and relaxing the skin in areas affected by inverse psoriasis. Some health experts recommend using a cream which contains vitamin B-12 and avocado oil for treatment, although they also indicate that additional research is necessary to prove that this cream really works. Some vitamins that have proven to give successful results in the treatment of psoriasis are A, C, E and D. Moreover, some minerals are also considerably helpful, and these include zinc, sulfur and selenium. Vitamin A or carotene is important for facilitating skin elasticity, and a deficiency of the vitamin may lead to increased chances of psoriasis. Nevertheless, it is essential that you consult your health practitioner before beginning on any large doses of a vitamin or mineral.

Psoriasis mainly develops because of an inefficient immune system, and if you were to only take into account the treatment of skin lesions, you would only be suppressing the symptoms of the disease. This will leave the root of the problem intact, and this may lead to frequent recurrences. Doctors suggest a proper diet and exercise is the best way to treat the root of the problem. This does not involve any serious side effects. Additionally, you may also use natural topical creams for relief. Rotating the treatments, in the guidance of a health practitioner of course, will help you achieve remission from the condition.
