Scalp Psoriasis Home Remedies

Home remedies are alternative forms of treatment, and inexpensive as they are, they are equally useful. However, before you start using these home remedies for the treatment of scalp psoriasis, you must understand that although they do help in relieving you from the symptoms of the condition, they do not offer a complete cure to it. If you are suffering from a mild case of scalp psoriasis, or your psoriasis has just begun affecting your body, these may help in providing relief. Nevertheless, the success of these remedies is not general, and the rate of success varies individually.

Scalp psoriasis home remediesOlive oil
Warm olive oil is a popular remedy. If scales have developed on your scalp, you could try warming about ¼ cups of olive oil and massaging your scalp with it. Try this remedy at night, and use your shampoo and conditioner to rinse off the oil in the morning. Some experts also suggest alternating this remedy with aloe vera gel and garlic oil. Mix equal amount of these in a container, and shampoo in the morning as usual.

Aloe vera
This makes as one of the best home remedies for scalp psoriasis, although not many people are actually aware of the cure. The process of treatment is fairly simple, and all you need is raw aloe vera juice and some fresh water. Take about half glass of the juice and mix it in an equal amount of water, and apply the mix gently on your scalp. Massage in a circular fashion. The mixture will help relieve you from the symptoms of the condition and will also effectively help in minimizing inflammation and itching.

Similar to aloe, ACV has long been used to treat minor burns and other inflammations related to the skin. ACV, or apple cider vinegar, possesses anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which effectively help in soothing and healing the infections. The ideal treatment procedure requires you to mix ACV in fresh water and apply it to your hair by gently massaging it.

Green tea and turmeric
Consumption of green tea is significantly helpful in controlling scalp psoriasis. Coffee, however, is completely in contrast, and has been known to increase the possibilities of outbreaks. Many people also recommend adding a little turmeric to green tea to enhance the effect.

Palm oil, tea tree oil and vitamin E acetate
A combination made from using these three ingredients is known to be the best home remedy for scalp psoriasis, and this is not just a theory backed by local belief. In fact, FDA itself agrees that using a mixture made from appropriate quantities of vitamin E acetate, tea tree and palm oil can work a magic when it comes to treating patients suffering from psoriasis. Palm oil is easily absorbed by the skin, and works to form an external layer. Vitamin E acetate is essential for extra protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Lastly, but equally important is the role which tea tree oil plays. This oil is known to facilitate healthy skin, free from inflammation.

Essential oils
This form of treatment involves making of a mixture from three oils, namely olive, oregano and calendula. The recommended quantities are – a cup of olive oil, about 2 drops of calendula oil and 1 drop of oregano oil. Gently massage your scalp with the mixture, and shampoo. Once done, rinse your hair with the vinegar rinse.

Castor oil
Castor oil is immensely beneficial. The plant is grown popularly across tropical regions, and these include regions lying in the Mediterranean Basin and Eastern Africa. India is also a very large producer of castor oil. The seeds of the fruit are poisonous, and can have ill effects on an individual’s health if consumed. Nevertheless, they are rich in triglycerides, and also consist of ricin, a toxic protein.

Castor oil acts as a natural emollient. The oil gets absorbed very quickly through the scalp or skin, and therefore quickly facilitates the production of elastin and collagen. Additionally, it also causes the skin to soften and hydrate. Your skin will have a youthful look, and will feel more soft and plaint. It is only because of these qualities that the most reputed skin care products make use of castor oil.

Using castor oil for the treatment of scalp psoriasis

The steps for treatment are:
•    Take a squeeze bottle (ideally a narrow tipped one), and pour some castor oil in it. Now, massage your scalp with the oil in gentle, circular motions. When you massage, ensure that all the affected areas get covered by the oil. Needless to mention, it is best if you perform the massage at night before you go to bed.
•    After you are done massaging, use a plastic shower cap to cover your head. If you are afraid of your pillows getting stained with oil marks, it would be best to cover them with large plastic bags.
•    Shampoo as usual when you shower.

Dermatologists recommend undergoing this procedure at least once a week until you start noticing the difference.

Despite all the benefits castor oil has, you must be cautious when using it. Above all, use the oil in moderation. There are side effects associated with its consumption, and these mainly include nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Health experts recommend using half to one teaspoon of the oil on a regular basis. Additionally, you should always consult your doctor or speak to a health expert before using castor oil.

Exposing the affected areas of your scalp to natural sunshine also helps in relieving you from the symptoms. However, do not expose psoriasis directly to the rays of the sun. Cover it with some cloth, or use a sunscreen.

Dead Sea salt
Scalp psoriasis can be treated using Epsom salts or Dead Sea salts. Apply the salts on the affected areas of your scalp before you shower, and they will effectively help minimize the swelling, while also simultaneously helping in improving the overall condition of the skin.

Doctors also recommend rinsing the scalp with a mixture of Dead Sea salt and water. The appropriate amount should be a tablespoon of the salt combined with two quarts of fresh water. Mixing a tablespoon of the salt with your usual shampoo also has a good effect on the treatment of scalp psoriasis.

Consuming buttermilk as a regular part of your diet also has significant effects on the condition. Alternatively, applying a cloth soaked in buttermilk to the affected areas also helps considerably.

This is amongst the most important home remedies for the treatment of psoriasis. An interesting fact that needs mentioning here is that improving your diet does not only help relieve you from the symptoms of scalp psoriasis, but also aids in treating psoriasis of many other forms. Doctors strongly suggest consuming vegetables and fruits. Vegetables which help improve your condition in this case include asparagus, spinach, romaine lettuces, turnip greens, peas and beans. All these have high folic acid content, and are thus very helpful. Additionally, vegetables rich in calcium content are also very effective, and these largely include drumsticks leaves, lotus stems, fenugreek leaves and curry leaves.

Psoriasis diet
Consumption of nutritional supplements is also advised, and you will want to focus on the concentration of vitamin A, E and zinc for proper treatment of psoriasis. Typically, supplements containing omega 3 are recommended for treatment. Remedies made from herbs such as cleavers, burdock root, figwort, red clover, dandelion, mountain grape and yellow dock also helps alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis.

The University of Maryland Medical Center also recommends three supplements for those looking for a speedy treatment. These include shark cartilage, folic acid and fish oil. Health experts from the University also said that primary studies on herbs such as Oregon grape, vitamin B12 and aloe vera suggest their use in the treatment process. However, they also said that these suggestions were only based on primary studies, and nothing has yet been confirmed scientifically.

While natural supplements are known to work in a number of conditions, it does not necessarily imply that these methods are safe. Therefore, you must always consult your doctor before you begin the consumption of any natural supplement. Although there are almost no severe side effects of these herbs and vegetables, it is still a good idea to speak to your doctor about them to prevent any potential health issue.

Changes in lifestyle
Flares of scalp psoriasis may be the result of triggers, and therefore it is very important to avoid them. Some known triggers are certain food items, cold weather, coming in contact with certain materials and of course, stress. If an area on your body irritates, refrain from scratching it. Avoiding alcohol and cigarette smoking may also be beneficial.

Stress is a very popular trigger, and you will want to reduce your stress level to avoid flare ups of the condition. There are several relaxation techniques that help avoid stress. Deep breathing is probably the most commonly used technique for relieving yourself from mental stress.
